Integrated Management Systems

Integrated Management Systems

An integrated management system is a single system designed to manage multiple aspects of an organisation’s operations in line with multiple standards, such as those for quality, environmental and health and safety management.

Integrated Management Sytstems (IMS) usually comprise of all three of the below standard elements or can consist of any two of the three elements with the other outstanding element optionally being added later.

  • AS/NZS ISO 9001:2016 Quality Management System

  • AS/NZS ISO 14001:2016 Environmental Management System

  • AS/NZS ISO 45001:2018 OH&S Management System

Each represented standard (element) has its own management plan and support appendices and has a measure of independence. Elements are also interdependent as required and integrated where possible i.e. where there is clear evidence of duplication so as to simplify and improve collective system performance.

It is expected in a controlled manner, that the three components of the IMS will continue to grow/merge together overtime where benefits outweigh disadvantages. Always ensuring that the integrity and overall organisation performance is maintained across the three standards.

Benefits of Integration

In an integrated management system, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Successfully integrating your management systems can have a number of very tangible benefits for your organisation, including

  • Avoiding duplication of processes and effort

  • Makes internal and external auditing easier

  • Consistent outcomes, measured and monitored

  • Increase in efficiency, productivity and profit
